how we do it
QOONAS heartmade toys are unique, traditional and modern art toys.
Our art toys are inspired from the Ecuadorian mythical symbolic universe, in other words our legends, myths, cultures, traditions, celebrations, customs, urban phenomena, etc.
The collection of Popular Celebrations is made up of 5 characters, with a limited edition of 50 each.
Is every character really unique? Yes, none is repeated and this is possible thanks to our complex design system, which allows a high degree of variability; and being that they are handmade we assure that all are different.
The design creates, coordinates and combines during each process, it elaborates the primary layers and selects the secondary parameters, the design is permanently present.
The primary layers are intimately related with the secondary parameter. Without the secondary parameters we would not be able to build the primary layers and without the first ones there would be nothing.
Primary Layers: Form, Paint and Decoration
They are the embryo , it’s the idea on paper or computer that defines the features of the character.
Form – L1
This is our semi-industrial process. It is the wild birth of the toy. We design 5 different models from each character, developing a total of 25 different wooden models.
The process used to obtain the form is: choice of wood, cut, polish, carving, sanding, filling, fine sanding and building.
We call it a wild process because the rectangular wood pieces are cut down with machinery to then continue with the sanding and building which is manual.
Painting – L2
Once we have the wooden toy we apply the previous made design.
We apply different color techniques, the main ones are flat acrylic colors and combined with the color of the wood, we have extreme care with the faces.
Decoration – L3
In decorations the changes are larger than what is used in the painting. The materials we use are much more, applying, costumes, macramé and jewelry, body decorations, incisions , carving and accessories.
Secondary Parameters: Types of wood, color palate and supplies.
The main function is to provide a larger percentage of variability of toys to assure that they are different.
Types of Wood – P1
We use 3 different types of wood: pine, cedar and oak, which are white, red and black. The production is 40% pine, 40% cedar and 20% oak.
Color Palate – P2
We use 13 color palates combined differently and in different proportions, yet sometimes we omit the palate and the painting becomes more intuitive and free.
Supplies – P3
The advantage Ecuador gives us is that we have an enormous amount of natural supplies for arts. Taking advantage of this variety we combine and mix all materials that are autochthonous.
The process that makes QOONAS heartmade toys come to life is the design – production and post-production.
